MEMBER PROTECTION
Altona LSC is committed to providing a safe, fair, and inclusive environment for all members, adhering to the policies set by Life Saving Victoria (LSV) and Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA).
SLSA Policies
Members protection policy 6.05
Complaints resolution policy 6.06
Core Principles
-
Prevent Harm: Prohibit and address behavior that constitutes discrimination, harassment, bullying, sexual misconduct, and abuse (physical, emotional, or neglect).
-
Uphold Standards: Ensure all members adhere to the Altona LSC Code of Conduct, which outlines expected standards of behavior for all members, volunteers, and parents/guardians.
-
Ensure Fairness: Provide a clear, confidential, and unbiased process for raising and resolving complaints in a timely and sensitive manner.
Every member has the right to be treated with respect and dignity and to participate in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe.
The Role of the Member Protection Officer (MPO)
The Member Protection Officer (MPO) is a critical, independent role within the club, serving as the first point of contact for any member with a sensitive concern or complaint.
The MPO acts as a neutral advisor and ensures that all matters are handled in line with the club's policy and LSV/SLSA guidelines.
Key Responsibilities of the MPO
-
Confidentiality
The MPO’s primary duty is to listen to concerns in strict confidence. Information is only shared with the necessary parties (e.g., the Club President or LSV) with the member’s explicit consent, or where legally required (e.g., mandatory reporting of child safety issues).
-
Advice and Support
The MPO provides advice on what options are available to the member (e.g., informal resolution, mediation, formal complaint) and supports them through the chosen process.
-
Education
The MPO helps promote awareness of the Member Protection Policy, the Code of Conduct, and the importance of a safe club culture through club communication and training.
Members are encouraged to contact the MPO if they witness, experience, or become aware of any conduct that breaches the Code of Conduct or raises a welfare concern.
